In June, We Celebrate Everyone

June is Pride Month, which is a time for our collective voices from around the world to come together and support and honor our LGBTQIA+ community. At Element Apothec, we believe inclusion and diversity are essential for achieving our vision and fulfilling our purpose: that everyone deserves better. Pride Month offers all of us a chance to celebrate, show support, and raise awareness for LGBTQIA+ rights.

We can all take time to learn how we can create a more inclusive community and use this month as a catalyst for real change. We have the opportunity and ability to create a much more accepting world - not just this month but everyday. Small acts of inclusion can truly have a big impact on making others feel accepted.

Here are some of the ways we can all encourage inclusivity...

Take a moment to reflect

Recognizing and addressing areas of bias is one of the most effective ways to start thinking more inclusively. You can continue to discover areas of weakness, which is fine as long as you are committed to trying to live a more inclusive life.

Create deeper connections through conversation

Just because you seem to be different from someone doesn't mean you can't interact. Engage in a conversation with someone who has a different background or viewpoint than you. Invite them to a meal, or simply say "hi" when you see them. By initiating a conversation and making others feel comfortable, you get to know them on a more personal level and might even make a new friend. You will also inspire others to do the same.

Use inclusive language

Using appropriate and respectful language makes those around you feel included and can set a good example for those with whom you interact. For example, you might ask new friends what pronouns they use for themselves or use the term "partner" instead of "boyfriend/girlfriend."

Think about how to represent other voices

At company meetings or friendly gatherings, ask yourself, “Who is at the table? Whose voices are missing?” and consider ways to incorporate diverse perspectives into your company, community, or conversations. If you don’t feel that diverse perspectives are being represented, brainstorm solutions together. Involve diverse voices and reach out to the LGBTQIA+ community to get everyone involved in the conversation.

Support businesses of underrepresented groups

Seek for ways to try new restaurants or help companies run by underrepresented groups. Most likely, you'll find something different to enjoy — and you'll be able to tell others about it and encourage your friends and family to do the same.
